A quick post regarding the performance of the new AF system on the Canon 7D.
I wanted a combined test in this shutter squeeze.
Camera: 7D
Lens: 16-35 f2.8 L II
ISO: 1600

It is important here to note that the squeeze followed the moving subject from the foreground (white T-shirt) and change of subject to follow the background subject black T-shirt)
In this sequence is combined the Canon’s new AF system in Ai Servo mode combined with high ISO, panning, changing of subject and changing of contrast on the zone of focus.
Images shot in JPEG mode from the camera. Cropped with Adobe camera raw with no additional ingredients (no sharpening, no color correction …)
The plan was walk around in Floriade with a model for a few outdoor shots but the model called in sick so …
This explains why I had the 16-35 f2.8 L II instead of another more exotic lens for “sport” photography.
A more intensive and extreme test of the new Canon AF system is coming shortly (I did the tests and am in the process of putting it online).

Why outdoors?
I’m looking at the 7D to improve my indoor sports shots where I have to use ISO 1600 and fast lenses to capture the action. With my 20D and f2 or faster lenses, the images are still too grainy for anything much bigger than 5×7.
At least you are shooting action -which is what the 7D is meant for. The other sites I’ve found shot fruit or outdoor wooden fences.

I plan to shoot some basketball and hockey very soon. Stay tuned as I will definitely give my impressions on the camera here.
