Canon 5D2. Birth of controversy.

There is a lot of dicussion around on various forums regarding the Canon 5D2 and its new features. Some yell out for scandal why Canon put a video mode in a D-SLR and other complain about the “affordable” (but not confirmed) price of 2500 USD body only. The main argument found around is that “uncle Bob” could have the same camera as you at a wedding …

Well, I’d say that a camera doesn’t have to be expensive to give fantastic images. Having a top of the line camera doesn’t make you an outstanding photographer either. If you know how to pull the best out of your gear, if you master the light and composition, you can have kiler images even with apoint ans shoot. At least that’s what I think and believe.

Other than that, I still like to have the lastest gears because, because … because I like it. And if it could help me to improve my photography than why not? I used to mix still images and short video sequences in my slide show, and the brides like it, so now with full HD video function built in the Canon 5D2, why should I complain? In fact I don’t.

The 5D2 detailed

As announced, and anticipated a few days before Photokina, the Canon 5D2 has been reveiled a bit more from inside out.

Some existing features, largely derived from the 1D series (High Tone Priority, sensor self cleaning, sRAW modes, ISO display in viewfinder and top LCD, Live View, AF micro adjustments …) and some to match with the competition, did I say Nikon? (Auto ISO, ISO range, HDMI port, video mode …)

But the 5D2 does come with its own, and exclusives, features, such as:

– Full HD video (1080p)

– DIGiC 4

– Ir port to be triggered wirelessly with a remote (no more needs for the cable and the pocket wzard)

– Same sensor as the flagship 1Ds3 ?

– Auto lighting mode (similar to Nikon D-Lighting ?)

– Vignetting correction

The list is long and until I can put my own fingers onto it, stick around for more update.

Week end with family

Mom and Dad came to see us down under for a few days and we really needed to see them. My family is kinda multicultural and a bit around the globe (US, FRANCE, BELGIUM, CANADA and AUSTRALIA) so when we have the opportunity to get along together, we try to make the most out of it.

We had some relaxed time las saturday before the rush of the new season. We took momand dad to Floriade and I’d rather say that we did well as we had a welcomed rain in Sunday.

Anyway, this morning I drove mom and dad to the train station in Kingston and snapped these few shots. It was between 0530 and 0630 in the morning.

The first one is of mom and dad, sitting in the train, shot through the train’s window. I took this shot from the quay and used my shadow to block the reflexion and it is kinda cool.

Canon 5D2 officically announced

It’s been a little teasing game between Canon and the rest of the (photographers) world these last days.

The long waited Canon EOS 5D MK II is now officially announced. Against all expectation regarding its sensor, the 5D2 doesn’t “reuse” the 16 MP of the 1Ds MK II but the newly released 21 MP sensor of the flagship 1 Ds MK III.

Instead of a dual DiGIC 3 engines, the 5D2 boats a new DiGIC 4 engine and the ISO range goes from 100 to 6400, boostable to 50-25400. Lined up with the L series lenses, this new “mid range” camera will play in the medium format playground.

I can’t wait to start shooting with one so I already put a pre-order order 🙂

Floriade ’08

Spring’s Back 🙂 I’ve never been so impatient looking for the return of Spring, even I managed to escape a few times during Winter to shoot some destination weddings and engagements. It was so nice to be out there welcoming the first blooming flowers. The day was exceptionally warm, enough to only wear a “normal” shirt.

Something tells me that I’m gonna love this seasons, especially because of the return of the wedding season as well. Stick around for more posts.

Happy accident

I’ve heard seen other photographers’ “happy accident” before and never had one.. untill this one.

My main light didn’t go off and I only got the back light on this shot. When it may not be suitable for an album, it is still a good photo to show off, I recon. So, here it is.
